UCM and Biosphere Isle of Man Announce Research Festival Keynote

The Research Festival keynote address, entitled Songs, Stories and Stewardship: Culture and Nature in a Living Biosphere, will be delivered by Dr Mairi McFadyen, whose lecture will set the tone for the festival, offering a thought-provoking exploration of how cultural heritage can shape more sustainable futures.

Dr McFadyen, based in the Scottish Highlands, is a researcher, educator and creative practitioner and a compelling and engaging speaker, The lecture will offer a powerful perspective on the role of culture in shaping environmental understanding and action. Her lecture will invite audiences to consider how individuals and communities can draw on their own cultural heritage to strengthen connections with nature and contribute to the future of the Isle of Man Biosphere.

In the context of Blein ny Gaelgey (the Year of Manx), this year’s lecture is timely. Dr McFadyen will reflect on the deep and enduring links between language, culture and environment, highlighting how the Manx language and cultural traditions are rooted in the Island’s landscapes—and how they can help guide a more sustainable and resilient future.

The Annual Biosphere Lecture, will again be the keynote of the Research Festival, which will continue on Friday 23rd October at the Villa Marina. Last year over 300 people attended the 2-day event, which brought together researchers, academics, business and students from both on and off-Island.
